- Standard work day shortened. Progressives want 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep, and 8 hours of leisure. This causes the rise of activities such as amusement parks (Coney Island).
- Bicycling becomes popular. “I think it has done more to emancipate the woman more than anything in the world” -Susan B. Anthony. Biking transformed women’s clothing and made it acceptable for women to dress casually. It also eliminated the need for women to have a chaperone.
- Sports become businesses. Baseball and bare-knuckle boxing were highest grossing.
- Newspaper Circulation. Pulitzer starts putting comics and sports in newspapers. Their audience grows and other companies copy them.
- Nationwide brand names. Ex. Coca-Cola, 1880s. Advertising industry takes off. Companies can claim anything about their products.
