East L.A. Walkouts/Blowouts (1 mar 1968 ano – 8 mar 1968 ano)

Descrição:

In East Los Angeles, the reality for Latino students within schools such as Roosevelt, Lincoln and Belmont looked like 60% drop out rates, 40 students class size average, and a counselor ratio of around 1 to 400. As a result, on March 1-8 1968, students walked out of their schools and voiced concerns over run-down campuses, overcrowding, corporal punishment, lack of college prep and culturally relevant courses, tracking, and teachers who were poorly trained, indifferent, or racist. Within their list of demands, these students asked for representation within staff, administration to be fired if they showed prejudice towards Mexicans, enforcement of Mexican and bilingual curriculum in education.
