The daughter of a paper manufacturer, she would play along with her mother on the piano, showing great promise on the instrument from a young age. She made her debut with the BSO at 17 on the piano, but stopped her public performances the next year after marrying a doctor 24 years older than her. She composed a lot during her twenties and thirties, and when her husband died in 1910, she moved to Europe to continue her performance career to great success before moving back to the United States and becoming the first president of the Society of American Women Composers.
