During this time period, White flight was occurring so were racial fears, and the constructions of highways/freeways. At the same time, the attraction of suburban life caused white residents to move out urban areas.
Beginning in the 1940s, the white population consisted of 110,274 out of 136,518.
By 1950, the white population decreased by a total of 14.8% (93,934).
By 1960, the white population decreased by a total of 38.6% (57,676).
By 1970, the white population decreased by a total of 65.6% (19,833).
