Several significant changes in art history occurred during the Early Christian era, which lasted from 313 to 600 AD. One of the most amazing changes was from pictures of ancient Greco-Roman culture to more religious and symbolic ones. Early Christian art, including frescoes, mosaics, and illuminated manuscripts, was created to teach the faith to those who could not read as well as to represent biblical stories. During this time, Byzantine art developed as well, fusing Eastern and Western styles and including highly stylised depictions of Christ and other holy figures. The Council of Nicaea, held in 325 AD, had a significant impact on early Christian art because it established normative teachings and beliefs that were reflected in the art of the time.
