The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was the final battle of the First Indochina war, which would end in Vietnamese Victory, bringing an end to French colonial rule in Vietnam. The Viet Minh attacked the French military stronghold in the Dien Bien Phu Valley, which had been put there in November of the previous year. by April 22, Viet Minh forces captured 90% of the area once held by France. Both sides lost thousands of soldiers during the battle. The French lost 2,200 soldiers during the battle, and had about 11,000 captured. only 3,300 of these prisoners of war made it home, the rest dying in captivity.
