1910: Jack Johnson was the first black heavyweight boxing champ, his fight against James J. Jeffries (who was white) was dubbed the “fight of the century“ and triggered dozens of race riots across the U.S.

1920: Fritz Polare & Bobby Marshall as the first black football players in the NFL

1936: Jesse Owens was the most successful athlete—of any race, and became the first American track and field athlete to win four gold medals at a single Olympic Games in Berlin (a humiliating moment for the Nazis because in their minds there was no way for black peoples to win)

1947: Jackie Robinson who became the first black Major League Baseball player in the modern era and broke the color barrier for African Americans in Baseball
