The Viet Cong was formed during WWII to beat back the Japanese who took control of Vietnam from the French. The Viet Cong then fought the Japanese using Guerrilla tactics to gain freedom. After WWII the Vietnamese thought they would become a free state but that was wrong. The French returned and took back Vietnam but were unable to do so because of the Viet Cong and Ho Chi Minh. This led to America getting involved in the matter and fighting against the Viet Cong and Ho Chi Minh. This is Significant to the war and history because the Viet Cong and Ho Chi Minh were the main forces of Vietnam fighting against America and France.
