The goal of the invasion was to conquer Soviet territory, eliminate the Soviet military threat, and secure access to resources that Germany needed to sustain its war effort. Despite initial successes, the invasion ultimately failed due to a combination of factors, including the harsh Russian winter, Soviet resilience, and strategic errors by the German military leadership.
