Charles de Gaulle, as France was on the edge of civil war, drafted a new constitution for France that gave the president more powers such as the right to choose the prime minister, dissolve parliament, and supervise the defense and foreign policy. De Gaulle also believed in a nuclear arms race with France dropping a nuclear bomb in 1960. De Gaulle also improved the French economy, with an economy that was grower faster than the US and became a major producer and exporter. However the government ownership of traditional industries like coal and railroads led to large government deficits. The cost of living also rose faster than the rest of Europe.
