The Just Deserts era attempted to limit inmate privileges and increase the pain of imprisonment. This means that punishments were harsh and swift, with little room for error. Punishments such as chain gangs were reintroduced, and Virginia even abolished parole. However, this era left us with the highest number of prisoners the US has ever seen.
