Who:
Franks: They started as a German tribe. They banded together to create Frankish Kingdoms and later France.
What:
The Franks were one of the groups that invaded the West Roman Empire. They took over Gaul.
The franks were heavily influenced by Roman culture.
The Franks were mainly Christian.
They used a feudal system. It was divided into pagus (districts) that lords would rule.
Merovingian Dynasty (496-751)
The first time the franks united.
Merovingian was overthrown by Pepin the Short, with the support of the higher class and the papacy (The Popes officers)
Carolingian Dynasty (750-887)
Carolingian was the name of a family that ruled the Frankish empire. They left and returned to the throne several times.
The Carolingian Renaissance was a small period between 780-900 where art and architecture thrived in the dynasty.

When: 300-987
Where: France and Germany
Why: What happened to the other Germanic tribes?
They migrated across Europe and melded into other countries.
End: Francia split in three as it became too difficult to run all their land. One was West Francia, the other was the Holy Roman Empire in the east, and the middle died off quickly after the division.
Timely Impact:
They ran the most powerful country in Europe. As well as helped to destroy the Western Roman Empire. Led to the pope gaining power.
Lasting Impact: Creation of West Francia, and the Holy Roman Empire. West Francia would later turn into France.
