Camp 4B Naoetsu (9 h 2 mar 1945 ano – 5 set 1945 ano)

Descrição:

As the war continued and the Japanese were overrun by American fighter planes, some prisoners, including Louis, were moved again, to Camp 4B Naoetsu. This would be the last camp Louie would see before being released. To Louis horror, "the bird" was in charge of the camp, again he had been thrown to this merciless monster. The only saving grace from the constant beatings was that as an officer in this camp, Louis was not sent to slave shifts at the coal barge. That was a rule that was quickly overturned by "the bird", now in addition to the relentless beatings and psychologic torment, Louis would now serve his days at a slave work camp. April 13, while in a potato field the prisoners caught their first glimpse of the new American powerhouse, the B-29. This overhead glimpse brought hope to the prisoners, the Americans were able to penetrate Japanese airspace this far inland. It was in Naoetsu that Louie and several other prisoners were subjected to over 200 punches to the face each as punishment for missing food items. It was during his time in Naoetsu that Louie was finally plagued with beriberi further worsening his emaciated body. One evening after being caught walking the grounds Louie was forced to hold a large wooden beam overhead for 37 minutes. Even this evil physical torture did not break Louis mentally. “He felt his consciousness slipping, his mind losing adhesion, until all he knew was a single thought: He cannot break me. Across the compound the bird stopped laughing.” (Hillebrand, Ch 30). Though they did not know it at the time Naoetsu would be their final camp before being freed from a POW.
