Realism (1 abr 1850 ano – 1 jul 1900 ano)

Descrição:

Realism, or Naturalism emerged around 1850 and was widely influential until the 1890s. Challenging previous art that depicted heroic compositions and grand historial subjects, realists believed that artistic works should depict everyday life accurately. Many Realists focused on the working class. They explored taboo topics with criticism from the middle-class.

The movement began in France, where artists like Gustave Courbet, Jean-Francois Millet, and Honore Daumier painted scenes of ordinary people and everyday life. Honore de Balzac portrayed urban society in his literature, like The Human Comedy and Father Goriot. Gustave Flaubert portrayed the middle class as materialistic and dull while also criticizing the influence of romanticism in Madame Bovary. Emile Zola expressed his animalistic view of working-class life in novels like Nana and The Earth.

Beyond France, Mary Ann Evans (under the pen name George Eliot), Thomas Hardy, and Leo Tolstoy depicted deeply felt pictures of social prejudice, sexual puritanism, etc. Tolstoy’s War and Peace developed a fatalistic theory of human history. He argued free will was an illusion and the achievements of even the greatest leaders were only the channeling of historical necessity.
