The National Hockey Association was the direct predecessor of the NHL, in fact NHL was founded by the same teams of the NHA with same rules solely because of an internal dispute which was ended by the founding of the NHL with the express exclusion of the troublesome party. The NHA was founded in 1909 due to matters surrounding another dispute, this one being the ECHA, which restarted as the CHA in 1909. Simply put, the CHA refused the admittance of two separate teams, one of which whos new owner had caused the aforementioned dispute in the ECHA and another whos owner owned two additional hockey teams. They decided to get together and found the NHA.

In the NHAs first season the teams were:
Cobalt Silver Kings, Haileybury Comets, Montreal Canadians, Montreal Shamrocks, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and the Renfrew Creamery Kings.

The most notable rule changes that the NHA adopted were, in 1911, the removal of the rover position, as well as allowing on the fly substitutions and the creation of major penalties. The NHA is also credited with being the first league to require players to wear numbers.

The only two original franchises from the NHA in the modern NHL are the Montreal Canadians and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The modern Ottawa Senators are a 1992 expansion team, the original closed down in 1934.
