Leila was a poet in the pre-Islamic period. She wrote primarily about her love for Imru' al-Qais (Majnoun) who was also a poet. The two lovers wrote about one another and their inability to ever truly be together since their fathers disapproved. Leila also wrote about the gender difference which prevented her from ever expressing her longing as much as Qais. Allegedly, Majnoun went crazy (which is the meaning of Majnoun) and his father sent him to Mecca to get rid of the spirits plaguing him. He returned just as mad with love. Eventually, Leila was married to another man and Majnoun went to live in the desert alongside the animals.
