The Great Famine in Ireland was a period of disease and starvation due to the failure of the potato crop.
As Ireland's population grew, conditions became more precarious, and in the mid-to-late 1840s and early 1850s, the potato crop failed due to blight and rot. The Great Famine followed, causing widespread sickness and starvation.

British aid was slow, late, and inadequate. Foreign landowners continued to exploit the Irish and their economy. Ireland experienced migration, early death, late marriage, and widespread celibacy. Between 1845 and 1851, around 1 million emigrated and 1.5 million died. The famine promoted nationalism and anti-British resentment.
