Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam was one of the leading activists and thinkers of the Renaissance, specifically the Northern Renaissance. His The Education of a Christian Prince combined idealistic and practical suggestions for a ruler's character. The Praise of Folly was a satire about political, social, and religious institutions. Erasmus also made a new Latin translation of the New Testament alongside the first printed edition of the Greek text. Erasmus argued that education in the Bible and the classics is the means to reform and that renewal should be based on "the philosophy of Christ", which emphasized inner spirituality and personal morality rather than Scholastic theology or outward observances.
