Charles VII revived the monarchy and France. He reconciled the Brugundians and Armagnacs who had been in a civil war for thirty years. French forces had driven out the English in everyone but Calais by 1453. Charles reorganized the royal council, gave increased influence to lawyers and bankers, and strengthened royal finances through taxes on certain products and on land. He created the first permanent royal army anywhere in Europe.
