The Northern Renaissance. (1 jan 1430 ano – 1 jan 1600 ano)

Descrição:

The ideas of the Italian Renaissance eventually spread north. Northern humanists developed the idea of Christian humanists, that the best elements of classical and Christian culture should be combined. The ideas of the Northern Renaissance spread quickly thanks to the printing press and an availability of paper.

Englishman Thomas More wrote Utopia, which pictured an ideal society that involves hardworking yet intellectual adults and educated children. Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam's The Education of a Christian Prince combined idealistic and practical suggestion for a ruler's character. The Praise of Folly was a satire about political, social, and religious institutions. Erasmus also made a new Latin translation of the New Testament alongside the first printed edition of the Greek text. Erasmus argued that education in the Bible and the classics is the means to reform and that renewal should be based on "the philosophy of Christ", which emphasized inner spirituality and personal morality rather than Scholastic theology or outward observances.

Northern artists involved more religion and included natural aspects of everyday life, rather than the Italians' more secular and idealistic art.
