Also known as the Maccabean Revolt, the Hasmonean Revolt was an attempt made by the Jews to retake the Temple from the Seleucid Empire. At the time, the Seleucids had excluded the Jews from the Temple. The revolt was lead by Judas Maccabaeus and his son Mattathias. The Jews succeeded in driving the Seleucids out of Jerusalem and following Judas' death, Mattathias lead the Jews into an alliance with Rome. The success of this revolt was in some ways indicative of the weakness of the Seleucids at the time, but it also marks the Jewish conquest against Hellenistic influence.

The story of the revolt is recorded in the books of 1 and 2 Maccabees which are included in the Tanakh and some Christian cannons.
