The Great Schism (1 jan 1378 ano – 1 jan 1417 ano)
Descrição:
(The term Great Schism may also refer to when Christianity was split into Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox in 1054. This era refers to when Christian Europe was split between two different popes.)
From 1309 to 1376, the Popes lived in Avignon, France, which is referred to as Babylonian Captivity, starting with pope Clement V. This significantly damaged papal prestige.
The Italian Pope Urban VI was under controversy for attacking clerical luxury, denouncing individual cardinals and bishops by name, and threatening to excommunicate some. He was then excommunicated by the cardinals. French Pope Clement VII was elected as pope, causing there to be two popes at once. European powers were split on the recognition of a pope, and the power of the church was threatened.
Those like the Conciliarists believed the church should be run by a council.
The Czech Jan Hus denied papal authority and declared indulgences of the church useless. Hus’s followers gained power and the Hussite Church was recognized.
A council was held and Jan Hus was burned at the stake. It deposed both popes and a conclave elected a new leader, Martin V.
