The increasingly unpopular Mitteleuropa (led by the former Central Powers) was defeated by an unholy alliance between the nationalist powers of Britain, France and Japan and the socialists in Spain and Russia, with the socialists doing the vast majority of the fighting. The war saw the large-scale use of espionage and the bombardment of cities.
