Serfdom in Russia was harsh, and under these conditions Emelian Pugachev came along and claimed to be the tsar (Peter III after returning from a trip. He surrounded himself with duplicates of the imperial family, courtiers, and a sec of state). He then led the most violent peasant uprising-pillaging, burning, and killing through eastern Russia. Famine dispersed them and Pugachev was betrayed, tried, drawn and quartered. Catherine responded by repressing serfs further, to the point of resembling chattel slavery.
