r. Charles I (1 jan 1625 ano – 1 jan 1649 ano)
Descrição:
Charles believed in the supremacy of the monarchy. He married a French Catholic princess and supported policies of the archbishop of Canterbury William Laud, who attempted to impose a new prayer book and bishoprics. He ignored grievances called against him and refused to summon Parliament to convene from 1629 onward (1629-1640, the "11 years of tyranny"), and instead financed the government with near-illegal stopgap levies. After failing to deal with revolting Scottish Calvinists as well as revolting Irish Catholics, the English Civil War ensued. He led one side of the war but was eventually executed in 1649.
