Cromwell, a member of the House of Commons and a devout Puritan, led parliamentary forces during the English Civil War. In 1647 him and his forces captured Charles I and dismissed anti-Cromwell members of the Parliament. He then took over after Charles' execution.

He formed the Protectorate, adapted mercantilist policies, and transformed England into a military state. The Navigation Act (1651) required English goods to be transported on English ships. Cromwell eventually died soon into his rule and his ideas did not last.
