Enduring Understanding: As Manifest Destiny motivated westward expansion in the United States, the debate over slavery became fiercer as Northern and Southern states grappled for political power. The conflicts over whether to allow slavery in the new Western states led to bloody conflicts such as the Mexican-American War and Bleeding Kansas, and eventually led to the Civil War when the South seceded to preserve slavery.

The Civil War was a war fought in America between between the Union and the Confederacy. Abraham Lincoln was the president in this time period, and his goal was to abolish slavery. Slavery was one of the main causes of the Civil War which is why Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in hopes of ending slavery. Additionally, the people were fighting over federal vs. state power due to the overpower that the states had.
