The participants were the Axis powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan, and the Allies—France, Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, and China. The war was considered an inevitable continuation , after a troublesome 20-year interval after World War 1. The 40,000,000–50,000,000 deaths that occurred in World War II make it the bloodiest conflict, and largest war in history. During this, the first atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, marking the beginning of U.S. involvement in the war. It resulted in the power of Europe shifting away towards the United States and the Soviet Union. By early 1939, Adolf Hitler had become determined to conquer Poland. Poland had guarantees of French and British military support should it be attacked by Germany. Hitler intended to invade Poland anyway, but first he had to minimize the possibility that the Soviet Union would do something about the invasion of one of their many neighbors. Negotiations led on August 23–24 to the signing of the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact in Moscow. In a secret protocol of this pact, the Germans and the Soviets agreed that Poland should be divided between them, with the western third of the country going to Germany and the eastern two-thirds being taken over by the U.S.S.R. However, less than two years after the pact Hitler sent troops into the Soviet Union, attempting to capture. His major mistake was he tried to do this in winter, which was a specialty fighting condition of the Soviets, and led to his inevitable downfall.
