The Holocaust began with Hitler's reign. It was the systematic slaughter of over 6,000,000 Jews and other people, including gays and Roma people. During the Holocaust, two thirds of all Jews in Europe were killed and one third of the world’s Jewish population. Anti-Semitism in Germany existed for a while , and so the Nazi plan to eradicate impure races, the “Final Solution” developed gradually, making it hard to find a set date to the start of the Holocaust. However, most historians agree that the 30th January 1933 when Adolf Hitler became Germany, was the main turning point that set everything in motion, marking this date as the start of the Holocaust. Between 1933 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its allies established more than 44,000 camps and other such sites. They used these sites for a range of purposes, including forced labor, detention of people thought to be enemies of the state, and for mass murder.

In March 1933, the first concentration camp, Dachau, opened outside of Munich, Germany. It was used for political prisoners and was the longest running camp, until its liberation in April 1945.
