Benjamin Franklin was flying a kite with silk string which has a key attached to it. He took a thin metal wire and put the wire in a jar. He wrapped a silk ribbon around the key and held it. He then waited for a thunderstorm to approach and then flew the kite. The negative charge in the clouds were passed on to his kite and when you brought his hand near the bare ribbon, he received a shock as the negative and positive charges met. His experiment was then successful which concluded that lightning was static electricity.
