Patriot Capt John Ryan escaping from a British prison ship in Charles Town harbor, made his way to the home of a Patriot in Columbia who gave him a horse. On leaving Columbia, Rayn was stopped and captured by Tory Holly and two others. He was released by the Tory commander. Holly stripped Ryan of all his good, clothes and horse. When Ryan got home, he gather several militia friends, found Tory Holly and shot him dead.
