The Vietnam War, which lasted from 1954 to 1975, was a running battle between the governments of South Vietnam and its key ally, the United States, and the communist government of North Vietnam and its allies in South Vietnam, known as the Viet Cong. The conflict in Vietnam, also known as the "American War" (or, in full, the "War Against the Americans to Save the Nation"), was a symbolic representation of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, as well as their allied forces, and was also a part of a larger regional conflict.
