There is a vast amount of different cultures on the continent of Africa. However what we find these many cultures have in common is the use of their art forms not as gallery works to merely be gawked upon but also as functional pieces that serve purposes mainly in performance and living.

What we also find is that there is depiction not through what is in front of the face but rather through abstraction. One could argue that the task of depicting such abstract ideas such as god and entities leads way to a sophistication that the early western world(having focused on realism) perhaps, did not grasp as well.
