The laws of the Sabbath year and of the Jubilee year are outlined in Leviticus 25.
The start of the Jubilee was on the day of Atonement in the 10 day of the 7th month (10 Tishri) of every 49th year and continue to the 10th Tishri the following year, i.e. into the 50th year. But the 50th year began the first year of the next 49 year cycle. (i.e. 7 x 7 yr sabbath cycles)

Whether this 'first year' was kept in 1444BC is debateable because the Israelites has only just established ascendancy over the Canaanites and the Ark had only just been relocated 'permanently' to Shiloh at the beginning of the year.
After Israel had entered the land on the 10th Abib 1451BC there followed another 7 years of conflict with the Canaanites, during which Israel's base camp was at Gilgal. (Josh 4/19) The wars ended towards the end of 1445 after which Joshua began to divide the land west of Jordan and he granted divisions to Judah, Joseph, Ephraim and the half tribe of Manasseh.

Early in 1444, after the tabernacle move, the rest of the land west of the Jordan was divided up among the remaining 7 tribes. Cp Josh 23/11 and Josh 15-17) and the men from the 2 &1/2 tribes from east of the Jordan returned home.

Prior to this time, Israel had lived off the crops planted by the Canaanites, native fauna and supplies from the two and a half tribes settled on the east of Jordan. Cp Josh 5/12; 24/13.

So this year was in effect the zero year of their 'tillage' when they would have planted and sown their own beginnings making it the zero year of the 49 year Jubilee period and the 7 year Sabbath period.
