On January 29, 1919, the government began a coordinated action against the Hamum. The garrisons of the small towns and ports of the hinterland along with the forces of al-Shihr captured six hundred of the tribesmen. The soldiers even took clan leaders who were in town for negotiations under the protection of the traditional mediators; among them was Salim Bin Habraysh, the leader of the powerful and rebellious Bayt ‘Ali clan. Members of clans innocent of raiding were freed and four hundred men from guilty clans were imprisoned, their weapons and camels taken in compensation for Hamum crimes. Twenty-seven leaders of the guilty clans were executed and buried in a common grave outside the al-Shihr wall, their number equaling that of casualties in previous Hamum raids. Edge p198
