The Russo-Japanese war was fought for Port Arthur because it was a warm water port that had just been given to the Russian by China and the Japanese wanted to take it. The Russians and Japanese were also fighting over Korea and Manchuria. Surprisingly the Japanese won and established themselves as an Asian superpower.
