CANUTE (Cnut The Great) THE DANE (1 abr 1016 ano – 1 jan 1035 ano)

Descrição:

The son of Sweyn Forkbeard. King of all England following the death of Edmund II.
- The Witan invited him to rule the country to avoid a disputed succession.
- He respected the the English laws and customs.
- His reign saw a partial blending of English and Scandinavian culture (favoured by the conversion of Denmark and Norway to Christianity in 10th and 11th centuries).
- After 1016, the kingdom of England became one component in a larger empire, ruled together with Denmark (from 1019) and Norway (from 1028). The legitimate Anglo-Saxon heirs were dispossessed or murdered, or lived in exile on the Continent, while the lands of the old aristocracy were parcelled out among Cnut’s associates.
- Power at the centre was reorganised into 4 earldoms to allow delegation (Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia and Wessex) and appointed an earl to rule each one in his name.
