In response to attempt to shut down coal mining operations by the Thatcher Government, coal miners went on a year long strike in opposition to the closure of the mines and to Thatcherite neoliberalism and land privatization. The strike eventually resulted in the miners defeat and the closure of the mines, and it can be considered one of most consequential defeats in British labor history, as the power of trade unions was greatly diminished following the failure of the strike.
