WW1 was the first total war. It began after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. In this war, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Canada, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). During this war, new technological advances emerged to give each side their own advantages. This war created a global instability which set the stage for WW2.
