After the Birmingham protests, the Children's crusades began. Almost 1,000 kids decided to go on a march through downtown Birmingham. Hundreds were arrested and protesters were battered by water from high power fire hoses, bitten and attacked by dogs, and beaten. The news images of these attacks drew the public's attention. The situation was becoming out o control so a compromise was made. The new compromise stated that lunch counters, public bathrooms, and drinking fountains would become desegregated (along with protesters being released from jail).
