After falsely accusing Poland of persecuting Germans who lived within the country, Germany would invade its neighboring country on the dawn of 1 September 1939 with an army of nearly 1.5 million men, with 2,000 tanks, 900 bombers, and over 400 fighter planes. Although Hitler and the Nazis would stir together other controversies, this would be the event that would lead France and Great Britain to declare war on Germany 2 days later, officially starting WWII.
