A northwestern Semitic (Amorite or Canaanite) people who subdued the Egyptian pharaohs of the Middle Kingdom upon their invasion. Along with Syria and Palestine under their authority, the Hyksos established a powerful kingdom, its capital being Avaris-Tanis in the Nile delta.
