Henry had wanted a son badly. He was convinced that his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, wouldn't have any children. Henry would ask the Pope to annul his marriage but the Pope had declined the offer. It was against Church's rule to allow divorce. Henry had decided to take his own steps into solving this by passing down some laws. These laws would put an end to the pope's power in England.
