The 1966 crew: led by James Mavor (oceanography), staffed by Galanopoulos (seismology), Edward Zarudzki (physics), Hartley Hoskins (geologist), Harold Edgerton (engineering). 1967 crew included Syridion Marinatos and Emily Vermeule. discover Akrotiri in 1967 - newspapers globally sensationally attribute the discovery to Atlantis, regardless of archaeologist confirmation. Some did, actually hope for it to be Atlantis - they just had yet to confirm any discoveries that definitively proved as such. Marinatos, a member of the sponsoring group the Archaeological Society of Athens, was believed by the others to feel jilted by the lack of recognition in newspapers of his theories or his or his groups involvement. Admittedly, in a U.S. newspaper clipping I own dated via copyright on an ad from 1967 which claims the expedition uncovered Atlantis, and mentions neither Marinatos nor the Archaeological Society of Athens. It does, however, mention the Americans.
