Fought on the Greek island of Crete. It began when Nazi Germany led an airborne invasion on Crete. After only one of fighting the Germans suffered heavy losses and it looked like a sure victory for the Allies. But the Germans were able to take hold of Maleme airfield which allowed them to bring in reinforcements and overwhelm the Allies. Most of the Allies were forced to withdraw and over half were evacuated while the rest had to surrender or join the Cretan Resistance.
