The French were in the middle of a dispute with America when John Adams became president.

They viewed the 1794 Jay’s Treaty as an attempt to help the British with the war against the French.

The French seized American ships that carried cargo to Britain to punish them.

President Adams sent a team to try and resolve the issue in Paris, in the fall of 1797 and the French officials didn’t meet the Americans (by choice) and sent three agents who demanded a bribe and a loan for France from the Americans, and the Americans refused this.

When President Adams learned about the situation, he was furious and urged Congress to prepare for war.

In the report to Congress, President Adams used the letters X, Y, and Z in place of the agents’ names.

Because of this, the whole affair was known as the XYZ Affair.

In April 1798 the affair became public to the people.

This whole affair almost started a war between America and France.
