New Deal (1 jan 1933 ano – 1 jan 1937 ano)

Descrição:

Theme: GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION, CONFLICTS (within government)

Introduced by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 - Roosevelt gets rid of the governments laissez-faire attitude and steps in, introducing a programme of government intervention and help. Tremendous gains by labour unions during the 1930s, partly as a result of the pro-union stance of the Roosevelt administration and from legislation enacted by Congress during the early New Deal. The NRA provided for collective bargaining and the Wagner Act required businesses to bargain in good faith with any union supported by the majority of their employees.

The CIO split from the AFL and become much more aggressive in organising unskilled workers who had not been represented before. Strikes of various kinds became an important organising tool of the CIO.

Alphabet agencies are set up to deal with specific areas (passed by Congress) as the President doesn't have the power to do it alone.

The New Deal was very far reaching and didn't just focus on workers rights.
