Composer who reset the Rinuccini libretto of La Dafne in 1608, about ten years after Peri's original setting.

The preface to the published score of his version provides most of what we know about the original La Dafne, because Gagliano acknowledges the novelty of Peri's and Rinuccini's spectacle. This testimony has led to its being accorded the exalted position it now occupies in history as the first opera, in preference to Cavalieri's pastorals or any previous favola in musica (musical tale), to use Gagliano's expression.
