Matthew Perry arrived at Edo Bay with an American fleet of four warships asking Japan wondering if they could have better treatment of sailors shipwrecked on the Japanese island because they were basically treated like criminals, this was also known as Treaty of Kanagawa. Six months later, he returned and the guns of Perry's ships forced Japan's decision. After this, Japan soon after signed similar treaters with several European nations. Resistance to opening foreign relations was especially strong among the samurai warriors in two southern territories, Satsuma and Choshu. his forces collapsed, ending the shogunate system.
