Sputnik 1 was the first ever artificial spacecraft to enter Earth's orbit. Launched by the USSR (Soviet Union) on October 4 of 1957 at 7:28 p.m. It was 58 cm in diameter, and took around 98 minutes to orbit Earth's elliptical low path. Sputnik 1 lasted around 3 months in Earth's orbit.
